Congratulations to Juan Cordon and his Flightdeck-737NG Project, as it has been awarded the Flightdeck Of The Month award for the month of October 2009! Juan is well known in the community and his website has been of great inspiration to many new flightdeck builders around the world. Juan was cordial enough to accept the award and agreed to answer a few questions regarding this project.
1. What reason or reasons did you have, that made you choose the B737NG for your home flightdeck?
Above all, the controls. I am not too fond of the Airbus's stick.

2. How does your family feel about your passion for aviation and what do they think of your project?
Well, my family thinks that it's a fabulous project and that I must definitely have some very special skills, in order to be able to buuild all these hand-made controls and panels.

3. It is obvious that you are very talented at what you do. What type of training and/or skills do you possess that allow you to create what you have already created?
I have studied electronics and have several diplomas on many disciplines. Besides, I am one that you would call "very handy".

4. What aviation related skills do you possess?
None really, but I am an aviation and space exploration fanatic.

5. During these times of economical instability, has it played a major role on your flightdeck plans?
Well honestly, yes. I have been forced to put my project on hold somewhat, but I do plan to resume it very soon, focusing more on the electronics aspect, such as IOCards.

6. Tell us a bit more of what you have already completed and at what stage of completion is your flightdeck?
All of the mechanical parts, such as the throttle with it's USB axis card from opencockpits.com, the control columns and yokes, rudder pedals, panels. In fact, everything you see on my website, has been completed and it's just a matter now of connecting all the hardware and panels to the IOCards from opencockpits.com.

7. What advice would you give to anyone who is contemplating the idea of building his or her own flightdeck?
To really THINK about it! Seriously, it's very important to know what you can do with your own hands and what you need to buy pre-made. Also, the available space can also affect the project (it's not the same thing a Cessna or a Boeing). Another thing is to evaluate the financial aspect and the degree of realismo that you want to achieve with your project. The rest, a TON of will power.

8. What are your plans for the future? What are your goals with your flightdeck?
I am trying to achieve a realism of perhaps, 80%, to the point where a real pilot can fly and test it.

9. Besides the B737, if you had to choose another airplane, which one would that be and why?
I am not going to start a new project until I have reached an 80% completion of my current flightdeck.

We at MyFlightdeck, want to thank Juan Cordon for allowing us to take a bit of his time in order to interview him and wish him the best on his future endeavors with this and many other projects. If you want to visit Juan's website, please go to http://users.skynet.be/jcordon/cockpit/
